Touristic description of the zone


 

National Park of Huascaran

Considered the highest snow-capped mountain of Peru. It is located at 22 kilometers from Huaraz and it has an altitude of 6.768 m.a.s.l., in an area of 340.00 hectares. This park has a varied flora and fauna.

The Huascaran Park was declared Natural Patrimony of Humanity by the UNESCO in 1985. It is characterized by its famous lagoons of intense colors; some of which are: Paron Lagoon, Llanganuco, Laca, Querococha.
Touring the Callejon de Huaylas is an unforgettable experience which begins in the city of Huaraz capital of the department of Ancash.

 IN THE CALLEJON:


Recuay
, the first town on the route, conserves its ancient houses in colonial style, mixed with simple buildings, with their mud-brick walls and tiled roofs. Situated at 3,422 meters, the town boasts mineral and thermal spas at Conococha, Ucuschaca, Pachacoto, Pumapampa, Burgos and Utuco, as well as Querococha and Conococha Lakes.

Carhuaz, name comes from, cea huash (yellow), referring to the yellow flowers of the heather (retama) which covers the nearby mountains. At 2,688 mts, Carhuaz keeps its Hispanic and Colonial atmosphere. A four kilometer road begins at Macará, 8 kms to the south, which lead to the medicinal and mineral water spas of Chacos, also known as "The Fountain of Youth".

Yungay, is symbolized by a large statue of Christ with his arms eternally open. In 1970 a powerful earthquake caused tons of earth and rocks to fall from Huascaran mountain and bury the town and its inhabitants. Even now you can see some traces of this tragedy; crosses, hills of mud, and twisted pieces of iron.
Llanganuco lagoon  

LLanganuco is comprised of two beautiful lagoons that are located in a narrow Valley Glacier, flanked by mountains snow Huascarán, Huandoy, Pishqo, Shapraraju, Yanapaccha and Chopicalqui (Cordillera Blanca), the path of Maria Josepha and la Quebrada Demanda, forming part of the Huascarán National Park and reserve of the biosphere of the Huascarán. 
On the shores of the first lagoon, called Warmicocha (female lagoon) and located at 3850 m above sea level, there remains lush forests and water is turquoise. The second lagoon called Orkoncocha (male lagoon) located at 3860 m, to the East side of the former is smaller.

Medicinal thermal baths of Monterrey

Is located in the Cordillera Blanca
  • Accessibility
Being a point eminently tourist to reach can be any tour starting in the city of Huaraz, southbound. Journey is 70 km, 3 hours, delay and traverses Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac peoples.

Chavín de Huántar
The ruins of Chavin de Huantar are located to the east of the Cordillera Blanca, about 110km from Huaraz, and at an altitude of 3250m. This fortress-temple was constructed between 1200 and 300 BC and is the only large structure remaining from the Chavin culture. It is thought to have been a major ceremonial centre. In 1985 UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Trust Site.
The site contains a large central square, slightly sunken below ground level, with an intricate system of channels for drainage. Much of the site comprises a series of underground chambers. A broad staircase leads up from the square to a large pyramid structure called the Castilla. In the heart of the underground complex is the crowning glory of the Chavin religion: a 5m-high carved rock known as the Lanzon. This dagger-like monolith depicts important deities worshipped by the Chavin culture: the Serpent, the Condor and the Feline (jaguar or puma).

Callejón de Huaylas - Lagunas Llanganuco
6: 00 a.m.: Reception at the terminal of bus and transfer to selected hotel.
8: 30 am: Breakfast at the hotel.
9: 00 a.m.: Tours through the Callejón de Huaylas, passing and appreciating the picturesque Andean peoples and the unique beauty of the Cordilleras Blanca and black. We will visit the provinces Carhuaz (natural cream liqueur and fruit tasting), Mancos, Yungay (Campo Santo Yungay and new Yungay) and finally arrives in the Huascaran National Park, being the main attraction of this trip the famous Lagunas Llanganuco; Place where you may be happy to walk on horseback or by boat, make a small walk around these two lagoons Chinancocha and Orconcocha respectively, contemplating the Majesty of the snow-capped Huascarán, Yanapaccha, Pisco and huandoy snowcapped mountains, flora and wild fauna surrounding these gaps.
Finally we visit the Caraz city, visit small factories of dairy products and other products of the region such as:  ice creams and fruit liqueur, honey from bees, jelly, cheeses, quesillos, butter, , special breads, etc.

9: 00 a.m.: Culture and leisure tourism. You will know the Andean Peoples Recuay, Ticapampa Catac. We will visit the Querococha lagoon. Finally arrives at the archaeological monument of Chavin.
